Section A02: 'L'Amerique! The United States through French Eyes'

Note: To take this course, you must also enroll in English 101 Section A02.

From Toqueville's De la Démocratie en Amérique to Henri-Lévy's recent American Vertigo, the United States have long been an object of fascination to the French. What they have said, and continue to say, has a great deal to teach us about both parties of this love-hate relationship. Beyond the clichés, how might we respond to French analyses of American society, both positive and negative? We will consider representations of the U.S.A. in French prose, poetry, cinema, popular music and advertising. (All readings in English.)
